What does sacrifice mean?

A religious activity, sacrifice, is a religious activity that provides offerings to salute gods, Buddhas or ancestors, expressing reverence and seeking blessing. It originates from the belief concept of harmonious coexistence of heaven and earth. The traditional customs of our country usually worship ancestors in ancestral halls or gods in temples.

Origin of sacrifice

The original sacrificial activities were relatively simple and barbaric. People used bamboo or soil to shape gods and idols, or drew images of gods such as the sun, moon, stars, and beasts on stone and rock as objects of worship. Then food and gifts for the gods were displayed in front of the idols, and the host prayed, while the sacrificers sang and danced to the gods.

After entering the civilized society, the abundance of materials made the sacrificial etiquette more and more complicated, and the sacrifices became more and more exquisite, and there were certain norms.

Sacrifice is a part of the Chinese rituals, and it is the main part of Confucian etiquette. There are five classics in rituals. Don’t focus on sacrifice, it is to benefit the gods. The objects of sacrifice are divided into three categories: gods, earth gods, and human ghosts. The gods are said to be sacrificed, the earth is only said to be sacrificed, and the ancestral temples are said to enjoy. The concept of sacrifice records the interpretation of Confucian books such as “Zhou Li”, “Book of Rites” and “Book of Rites” and “Book of Rites Justice” and “University Derivation and Righteousness Supplement”. In ancient China, “the gods are not of a kind, and the people do not sacrifice non-races”. Sacrifice has a Scholars can only worship their ancestors and the Kitchen God. The Qingming Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, and the Double Ninth Festival are the days of ancestor worship.
