Extended Information
English (English) is a language under the Indo-European-Germanic language family. It consists of 26 letters. It was born in Jutland and the Rhine Valley and spread to all parts of the world through British colonial activities. It later became an international language due to the economic, military and political leadership of the United Kingdom and the United States. Today it is an internationally designated official language (as a mother tongue), the official language of the European Union and many international organizations and Commonwealth countries, and the most widely spoken language in the world. It has the third largest number of native speakers in the world, after Chinese and Spanish.
Modern English flourished during the time of William Shakespeare, and some scholars divide it into Early Modern English and Late Modern English, with a dividing line around 1800. As the British Empire occupied and colonized most of the world, local languages also greatly influenced the development of English. Including John Wycliffe (one of the compilers of the English version of the Jewish Bible), Samuel Johnson (one of the editors of the first British dictionary), and William Shakespeare (a famous playwright and poet) are all important figures in the popularization of English.
