Indonesia observes Mother’s Day on December 22 every year.
Unlike Mother’s Day in other countries, Mother’s Day in Indonesia is a commemoration based on the setting of the first Indonesian Women’s Congress held from December 22 to 25, 1928. At that time, at least 600 women from dozens of women’s associations, women of all ethnic, religious, occupational and age backgrounds participated in this Congress.
Indonesia is still in the Congress held during the Dutch colonialism period. The Congress did not discuss how women, especially mothers, should be respected and pampered on certain days. The main goal is to increase the degree to which women are empowered in all aspects of life, such as marriage, education, association or organization. Later, after Indonesia gained independence in 1945, the government of the Republic of Indonesia took December 22, 1928 as the opening date of the first Indonesian Women’s Congress as the anniversary of Mother’s Day. President Sukarno officially declared December 22 as Mother’s Day in Indonesia by Presidential Decree No. 316 of 1953.
