What is the origin of Diwali Festival in Huaiyuan?
Diwali Festival in Huaiyuan originated from the commemoration of Yandi’s mother and daughter Deng.
According to legend, Emperor Yan didn’t see his mother for many days, so he ledpeople to search all night with lanterns, and finally found his mother in Fengxiang Huaiyuan (later evolved into Huaiyuan), which was full of fragrant Sophora japonica flowers. In order to show his filialpiety to his mother, Emperor Yan carried his mother around the village three times. Since then, on this day every year, people in Huaiyuan area will walk on stilts, play gongs and drums and light lanterns to commemorate this event. Pai Deng is a kind of lampmade by localpeople by hand. It consists of a lampholder and a handle, with exquisitepaper-cut on the outside and a candle fixed inside.
After more than 4,000 years, this festival is still full of lights. People take the sky as the curtain, the earth as theplatform, and under the sky, they worshipthe earth in the mostprimitive way, praying for good weather, nationalprosperity andpeople’s safety. Every year, on this day, every local household will elect representatives and hold high hand-made lanterns to attend a tour in front of the female shrine, praying forpeace andprosperity.
